Shipping Container Conditions

When making the decision to purchase a shipping container, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of the distinctions between container conditions and grades. This understanding will ensure that you choose the most suitable container to meet your specific requirements.

There are three primary container conditions to consider: Used, One Trip, and Refurbished. Each condition is further categorized into different grades, which provide insights into the overall condition and structural integrity of the container. It’s important to note that the condition and grade of the container will directly impact its price.

Used Containers

Our most popular option, used general-purpose containers, have been in heavy-duty shipping service for 5 to 15 years before being retired.

These containers typically retain their original paint and shipping line markings and may show signs of wear such as surface rust, dents, and scratches. While their appearance might be less pristine, these containers are generally structurally sound and can still serve effectively for cargo transportation, storage, and various other uses, depending on their condition.

New One Trip Containers

New One Trip shipping containers may have minor dents, dings, and scrapes from their ocean journey during regular shipping and handling.

Manufactured in Asia and transported to our depots worldwide, these containers are loaded with cargo once to reduce shipping costs. This strategy helps us offset repositioning expenses and pass the savings on to our customers, allowing us to offer the best prices.

Refurbished Containers

Refurbished containers are used Wind and Water Tight (WWT) containers that have been cleaned, primed, and repainted. Refurbishment revitalizes the container and can extend its lifespan. We offer three levels of refurbishment for used WWT containers:

  • Typical Refurbishment: The exterior is repainted, including the roof. This process involves removing loose rust, spot priming exposed metal, and painting over locking rods, gaskets, and decals.

  • Complete Refurbishment: In addition to the exterior work done in Typical Refurbishment, the interior is also painted.

  • Factory Refurbishment: This comprehensive overhaul includes new interior and exterior paint, new gaskets, and fresh container markings.

As Is Containers

An As Is container is one that has been inspected and found to have significant damage, making repairs to achieve Wind and Watertight condition cost-prohibitive.

These containers often have external and internal issues, such as holes, broken flooring, and other structural problems. We generally do not recommend purchasing an As Is container unless it will be used for purposes where structural integrity and exterior condition are not crucial.
